Abstract This article analyzes the historical development of ideas about the royal prerogative and its theoretical formulation. Author examines privileges and powers of English monarch, their legal basis and the appropriate components of the royal prerogative, including ordinary, extraordinary, feudal one and prerogative of «jus divinum». The article analyses ideas and viewpoints on the royal prerogative of the famous English lawyers, politicians and public figures of the epoch. The paper also discusses a number of issues on the historiography of the problem.
