Abstract The article describes the analysis of possible EEG correlates associated with optimal brain functional state in extreme life conditions. A brief historical analysis of the problem and a review of the current data electroencephalographic studies on this topic are presented. The author briefly discusses the concept of excess competency formation. The article suggests using the following temporal and spatial characteristics of the θ-synchronization and EEG indices as the activation EEG correlates of the organism reserve capacity: engagement, strong-willed effort, vigilance. In general, basing on the analysis the authors state that determination of basic EEG correlates of the person backup capability activation requires standard EEG range of 0,5–30 Hz, 10–20 monopolar standard scheme leads, with 8 leads (Fp1, Fp2, N3, N4, P3, P4, O1, O2). The given material may be of interest to professionals working in the study of altered States of consciousness, emergency medicine, life safety, high performance sport, man-of operator activity, man-machine interfaces, and many others.
