Abstract Metamaterials are artificial materials engineered to have properties that may not be found in nature. They are assemblies of multiple individual elements fashioned from conventional microscopic materials which it are usually arranged in periodic patterns. Unusual properties due to the resonant interaction of an electromagnetic wave propagating in a heterogeneous environment filled with inclusions, which have a special shape that provides a resonant excitation currents in the inclusions. Dispersion of a plane wave on a periodic structure from square double resonators is investigated. It is shown that in such structure resonant reflection of a falling plane wave is observed. Influence of the geometrical sizes of elements of structure (height of elements and section width) on the provision of a minimum of coefficient of transmission is considered. Results of numerical modeling of periodic structures with software FEKO use are given. Results are presented in the form of the generalized nomograms for the periodic structures located in a free space and on a dielectric substrate.
